SS-31 10mg
SS-31, also known as Elamipretide, is a cell-permeable tetrapeptide that concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Supplied as 10mg lyophilized powder in a sealed vial for in-vitro laboratory research.
About SS-31
SS-31 carries the sequence D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, where Dmt denotes 2,6-dimethyltyrosine. The alternating cationic and aromatic residues give the molecule an unusual property: it crosses cell membranes without a transporter and then accumulates in the inner mitochondrial membrane, reaching concentrations far above those in the surrounding cytosol.
Its molecular target is cardiolipin, a phospholipid found almost exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane. By binding cardiolipin, SS-31 is reported to stabilise cristae architecture and improve the efficiency of electron transport. This mechanism distinguishes it from conventional antioxidants, which scavenge radicals rather than addressing membrane organisation.
SS-31 belongs to the Szeto-Schiller family of peptides developed at Weill Cornell. In September 2025 elamipretide received FDA approval as Forzinity for Barth syndrome; the material supplied here is a research chemical and is not that medicine.

Research applications
SS-31 is used in laboratory settings for work including:
- Cardiolipin binding and inner-membrane stabilisation assays
- Mitochondrial respiration and oxygen-consumption-rate studies
- Cristae morphology imaging in cultured cells
- Comparative work against conventional antioxidant compounds
Handling and storage
Lyophilized SS-31 should be stored at -20°C for long-term stability and protected from light and moisture. The sealed vial tolerates ambient temperature for the duration of transit without meaningful degradation.
For reconstitution, bacteriostatic water is typically used. Add the solvent slowly against the inner wall of the vial rather than directly onto the powder, and allow the peptide to dissolve without shaking. Vortexing introduces shear forces that can damage peptide structure. Once reconstituted, store at 2-8°C.
Purity verification
Every batch Athenex Labs supplies is verified at 99%+ purity by high-performance liquid chromatography, with molecular identity confirmed by mass spectrometry. We source directly from ISO-certified manufacturers rather than through reseller chains, and we test independently rather than relying solely on supplier documentation. A batch-specific certificate of analysis is available on request.
Frequently asked questions
What is the sequence of SS-31?
D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, where Dmt is 2,6-dimethyltyrosine. The molecular formula is C32H49N9O5 with a molecular weight of approximately 639.8 for the free base.
Is this the same as Elamipretide?
Yes. SS-31, Elamipretide, MTP-131 and Bendavia all refer to the same molecule. Athenex Labs supplies it strictly as a research chemical, not as the approved medicine.
Which CAS number should I verify against?
736992-21-5, the free-base parent number. Material is commonly supplied as an acetate or TFA salt; the salt form is stated on the batch certificate of analysis rather than carrying its own CAS.
How should SS-31 be stored?
Store the sealed lyophilized vial at -20 degrees C, protected from light. Reconstituted solution should be kept at 2-8 degrees C and used within the window appropriate to your protocol.
