MOTS-C 10mg
MOTS-C is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded within mitochondrial DNA rather than the nuclear genome. Supplied as 10mg lyophilized powder in a sealed vial for in-vitro laboratory research.
About MOTS-C
MOTS-C stands for Mitochondrial ORF of the 12S rRNA type-c. It is transcribed from a short open reading frame inside the mitochondrial MT-RNR1 gene, making it one of a small number of known mitochondrial-derived peptides. Its sequence is Met-Arg-Trp-Gln-Glu-Met-Gly-Tyr-Ile-Phe-Tyr-Pro-Arg-Lys-Leu-Arg.
This origin is what makes it scientifically interesting. Most signalling peptides are nuclear-encoded; MOTS-C suggests the mitochondrial genome itself participates in metabolic signalling. It was first described by Lee and colleagues in Cell Metabolism in 2015.
Laboratory research has examined its role in AMPK activation via the AICAR pathway, its binding to casein kinase 2, and its characterisation as an exercise mimetic in metabolic models. At 16 residues it is substantially larger than the tri- and tetrapeptide bioregulators and is correspondingly more complex to synthesise.

Research applications
MOTS-C is used in laboratory settings for work including:
- AMPK and AICAR pathway activation assays
- Casein kinase 2 binding studies
- Metabolic and glucose-handling research in cell models
- Mitochondrial-derived peptide signalling investigation
Handling and storage
Lyophilized MOTS-C should be stored at -20°C for long-term stability and protected from light and moisture. The sealed vial tolerates ambient temperature for the duration of transit without meaningful degradation.
For reconstitution, bacteriostatic water is typically used. Add the solvent slowly against the inner wall of the vial rather than directly onto the powder, and allow the peptide to dissolve without shaking. Vortexing introduces shear forces that can damage peptide structure. Once reconstituted, store at 2-8°C.
Purity verification
Every batch Athenex Labs supplies is verified at 99%+ purity by high-performance liquid chromatography, with molecular identity confirmed by mass spectrometry. We source directly from ISO-certified manufacturers rather than through reseller chains, and we test independently rather than relying solely on supplier documentation. A batch-specific certificate of analysis is available on request.
Frequently asked questions
What makes MOTS-C unusual?
It is encoded by mitochondrial DNA rather than the nuclear genome — specifically by a short open reading frame within the 12S rRNA gene. Very few peptides are known to originate this way.
What is the sequence and molecular weight?
MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR, sixteen residues. Formula C101H152N28O22S2, molecular weight approximately 2174.6 for the free peptide. Material supplied as a TFA or acetate salt will have a higher measured mass.
Which CAS number is correct?
1627580-64-6. Note that 1627580-64-7 appears on some listings and is wrong — the final check digit is 6.
Is MOTS-C subject to sporting restrictions?
MOTS-C has appeared on the WADA Prohibited List since 2024. Athenex Labs supplies it strictly for in-vitro laboratory research and not for use in humans or in competition.
